A Shelter Built Like a Safe Room

Every Shelter Includes a Full Floor: Many shelters rely on five-sided construction or a bottom flange that anchors directly to the concrete. Valley Storm Shelters are different. Every shelter is fabricated as a completely enclosed six-sided steel cube with a fully welded floor. This creates a stronger, more rigid structure while also allowing us to utilize our exclusive deep anchoring system.

Reinforced ¾-Inch Steel Corners: Corners are often the most vulnerable part of any steel structure. That's why every corner of a Valley shelter is reinforced with both interior and exterior steel plates, creating corners that are approximately ¾-inch thick. This extra reinforcement helps the shelter resist twisting, impact, and structural deformation during extreme storms.

Structural Steel C-Channel Framework: Inside every shelter is an internal framework of heavy-duty 4-inch structural steel C-channel spaced approximately every two feet both vertically and horizontally. This internal skeleton dramatically increases strength in every direction, helping the shelter resist crushing forces and maintaining structural integrity under extreme loading.

Double-Layer Roof and Floor Construction: Around both the roof and floor, overlapping steel plates create a reinforced edge measuring approximately ½-inch thick. This is especially important at the anchor locations, where every wedge anchor passes through twice the amount of steel compared to many traditional designs — adding even greater strength where it matters most.

Protected Airflow: Every shelter includes three or more covered ventilation openings designed to provide fresh airflow while helping prevent wind-driven debris from entering during severe weather.

A Door Designed for the Worst Day

The door is arguably the most important component of any tornado shelter. It is also frequently the most fragile piece of the design. Rather than relying on complicated locking mechanisms with dozens of moving parts, we believe strength comes from simplicity and proven designs. A simple system has fewer components that can fail, and simple is easier for your family to operate when seconds count.

Massive 1¼-Inch Steel Locking Pins

Our storm locking system uses three solid steel sliding pins measuring 1¼ inches in diameter — similar in concept to the massive locking bars that protected ancient castles. Even if the door experiences a direct impact, the oversized receiver slots allow the pins to continue operating, helping ensure the door can still be opened after the storm has passed.

Premium Medeco Security Deadbolt

Every shelter includes a genuine Medeco deadbolt featuring pick-resistant and drill-resistant technology. Beyond tornado protection, many homeowners also use their shelter as a secure vault for firearms, valuables, important documents, and family heirlooms while traveling.

Bullet-Resistant Viewing Window

Each shelter includes a 1¼-inch bullet-resistant glass peephole, allowing occupants to safely inspect conditions outside without opening the door.

Inward Opening Door

Every Valley shelter door opens inward. This critical design feature helps prevent outside debris from trapping occupants inside after a tornado — a common concern with outward-opening doors.


An Installation System Unlike Anything Else

Even the strongest shelter is only as strong as the way it's anchored. That's why Valley Storm Shelters developed an installation system that goes far beyond simply bolting a shelter to a concrete slab.

Heavy-Duty Anchoring: Every installation combines industrial-grade ¾-inch wedge anchors with our proprietary CoreLock anchoring system to create exceptional holding strength.

The CoreLock™ Difference: Our exclusive CoreLock system begins by core drilling four seven-inch diameter holes through your concrete slab. We then excavate approximately 28 to 30 inches below the slab before filling each cavity with high-strength 3,000+ PSI concrete and embedding 28-inch, 1¼-inch diameter high-carbon steel anchor rods complete with bottom anchors. This creates deep structural anchors that tie the shelter into the ground — not simply into the surface of your concrete.

More Points of Connection: Even our compact 4′×6′ shelter includes an impressive 13 independent anchoring points. Larger shelters feature even more, distributing loads across the shelter while creating exceptional stability.

Possible Because of Our Full Floor: Our exclusive CoreLock system is only possible because our shelters feature a fully welded steel floor. Since many competing shelters lack a true floor, they simply cannot utilize this type of deep anchoring system or anything like it.

Exceeding ICC-500 Standards: Our shelters are also engineered beyond ICC-500 standards, one of the industry's most widely recognized benchmarks for storm shelter performance.

Independently Tested at Texas Tech University — National Wind Institute: Our shelters have undergone independent testing at Texas Tech University under simulated EF-5 tornado conditions, verifying their ability to withstand some of the most extreme forces found in nature.
