Most residential concrete slabs we encounter are ideal for installation.
In general, standard garage or shop slabs are typically between 4–6 inches thick. A 4-inch slab is commonly considered the minimum residential code thickness, while 6-inch slabs are generally considered heavier-duty.
Our installation systems are designed around these common slab thicknesses. However, slabs thicker than approximately 7 inches are not compatible with our CoreLock™ anchoring system.
Our Anchoring Approach
In addition to our proprietary CoreLock™ anchor bolts, we also utilize heavy-duty 3/4″ wedge anchors installed throughout the inside edge of the shelter for added strength. and redundancy. Even smaller shelters—such as our 4′ x 6′ models—typically feature 12 or more independent connection points anchored directly into the concrete slab.
What if my slab is thicker than 7 inches?
If your slab is thicker than 7″, we have the option to then install deeper wedge anchors, in lieu of CoreLock™, and provide an anchoring system appropriate for your concrete. If your slab is too thick for CoreLock™ to be installed, do not worry. Your shelter is ultimately being anchored into a larger/heavier slab and receiving the strength benefits of this larger slab.
New Concrete Slabs
We can install our shelters in garages, outdoor patios, carports, new construction, or onto any other durable concrete slab.
If you are pouring a new slab for your shelter, the ideal slab is 4–6 inches thick, with two feet of overhang or more. You are welcome to use mesh or fiber for added strength; however, rebar can occasionally limit our core drilling.
Please note: Valley Storm Shelters does not install new concrete slabs.
If you are pouring a new slab, the slab must cure for 30 days before installation of a Valley Shelter. However, as our normal lead time is a minimum of 4 weeks, we can work around the curing period for your slab—ordering your steel and fabricating your shelter while the slab cures.
We are also happy to coordinate with your contractor as we plan the installation date for your shelter.
